The Photo Collection of Fred Boissonnas

Frédéric (Fred) Boissonnas (1858-1946) was a Swiss photographer who stemmed from a well-known family of photographers in Geneva and is remembered primarily for his early photos of Greece. He learned the art of photography from his father, Henri-Antoine Boissonnas (1833-1889), and studied in Stuttgart and Budapest. He was fascinated by Greece and was there on an almost yearly basis in the period 1907-1913, bringing back thousands of photos. His trip to the southern Balkans in 1913 with Swiss art historian Daniel Baud-Bovy (1870-1958) was particularly fruitful. In 1919 he founded his own publishing house Editions Boissonnas and published some fifty books. Boissonnas' pictures of the southern Balkans were published in the volumes: L'image de la Grèce: l'Epire - berceau des Grecs (Image of Greece: Epirus - Cradle of the Greeks), Geneva 1915, and L'image de la Serbie: le berceau des serbes (Image of Serbia: Cradle of the Serbs), Geneva 1919. His photographs of Greece and, in particular, of Epirus and Chameria at the time of their incorporation into Greece, are not only of documentary value but also of great artistic skill. The present collection of the photographs of Fred Boissonnas is but a small portion of the photos he took in Greece and the southern Balkans.

Der Schweizer Fotograf Frédéric (Fred) Boissonnas (1858-1946) stammt aus einer bekannten Genfer Fotografenfamilie. In Erinnerung geblieben ist er in erster Linie für seine Griechenlandbilder. Von seinem Vater, Henri Antoine Boissonnas (1833-1889), wurde er früh in die Fotografie eingeführt und studierte in Stuttgart und Budapest. Boissonnas war von Griechenland begeistert und hielt sich in den Jahren 1907-1913 öfters dort auf, wo er tausende Aufnahmen machte. Die Reise im Jahre 1913 mit dem Schweizer Kunsthistoriker Daniel Baud-Bovy (1870-1958) war besonders ergiebig. Im Jahre 1919 gründete er einen eigenen Verlag, den Editions Boissonnas, und veröffentlichte über die Jahre ca. fünfzig Bücher. Boissonnas Balkanbilder erschienen u.a. in den Bändern: Epirus: die Wiege der Griechen, Genf 1920, und L'image de la Serbie: le berceau des serbes (Bild von Serbien: die Wiege der Serben), Genf 1919. Seine Griechenlandfotos, insbesondere die Bilder aus den, kurzer Zeit davor, von Griechenland einverleibten Epirus und Tschameria haben nicht nur dokumentarischen Wert sondern zeichnen sich auch durch hohes künstlerisches Können. Bei den hier vorgestellten Bildern des Fred Boissonnas handelt es sich lediglich um einen kleinen Teil der Aufnahmen, die er in Griechenland und im südlichen Balkan machte.

Frederik Buasona (Frédéric apo Fred Boissonnas, 1858-1946) ishte fotograf zviceran i cili lindi në një familje të njohur fotografësh në Gjenevë. Mbahet mend kryesisht për fotot e hershme artistike të Greqisë. Artin e fotografisë e mësoi nga i ati, Anri-Antoan Buasona (Henri-Antoine Boissonnas, 1833-1889), dhe studioi në Shtutgart dhe në Budapesht. Buasona ishte magjepsur nga Greqia dhe në periudhën 1907-1913 udhëtoi në tokën helene pothuajse çdo vit, duke bërë mijëra fotografi. Udhëtimi në rajon në vitin 1913 me historianin zviceran të artit Daniel Bo-Bovi (Daniel Baud-Bovy, 1870-1958) ishte veçanërisht i frytshëm. Në vitin 1919 themeloi shtëpinë botuese Editions Boissannas dhe botoi gjithsej rreth 50 libra. Fotot e Buasonasë nga Greqia dhe jugu i Ballkanit u botuan ndër të tjera në vëllimet: L'image de la Grèce: l'Epire - berceau des Grecs (Imazhi i Greqisë: Epiri - djepi i grekëve), Gjenevë 1915, dhe L'image de la Serbie: le berceau des serbes (Imazhi i Serbisë: djepi i serbëve), Gjenevë 1919. Fotografitë e Greqisë, dhe në mënyrë të veçantë ato të Çamërisë në kohën e përfshirjes së saj në shtetin grek kanë jo vetëm rëndësi dokumentare por edhe një vlerë të lartë artistike. Ky koleksion i fotografive të Fred Buasonasë është vetëm një pjesë e vogël e fotografive që ai bëri në Greqi dhe në jug të Ballkanit.
