Northern Albania in 1902 – 1908

Dr Erich Liebert (1873-1951) was an Austrian physician and an intrepid explorer of the northern Albanian mountains. He was first in Albania in September 1902, on which occasion he ventured through the region of Pult and into the mountains south of the Drin. In August 1903 he was in Shkodra again and set out through the mountains in the company of an Albanian called Luigj Jakovic. This time he hiked through the tribal regions of the Dushmani, Merturi, Gashi, and Krasniqi. In August 1904, Liebert set off once more through the northern Albanian mountains in search of the source of the Valbona River in Krasniqi territory, which he reached via Theth, Abat and Nikaj. He returned to Shkodra over the Qafa e Valbonës pass and Theth. His tours of 1903 and 1904 are recounted in his book Aus dem nordalbanischen Hochgebirge [From the Northern Albanian Highlands], Sarajevo 1909, from which the following photo collection is taken. In this volume, he tells us that he was also in Albania in 1905, 1907 and 1908 but we have no published account or photos of these journeys. In 1910, Liebert published an article on blood feuding and hospitality among the Albanian highlanders. During the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and probably during the First World War, Dr Erich Liebert worked for the Red Cross in Turkey, in particular during the Dardanelles Campaign. Little else is known today of this great adventurer.

Nordalbanien in den Jahren 1902 – 1908

Dr. Erich Liebert (1873-1951) war ein österreichischer Chirurg und gleichzeitig einer der großen Entdecker der nordalbanischen Berge, auch wenn er heutzutage noch wenig bekannt ist. Er betrat albanischen Boden zum ersten Mal im September 1902, als er das Gebiet von Pult und die Berge südlich des Drinflusses bereiste. Im August 1903 war Liebert wieder in Albanien und durchzog mit dem Albaner, Luigj Jakovic, das Stammesgebiet der Dushmani, das linke Ufer des Drinflusses, den südlichen Teil des Stammesgebiets der Merturi, und dann Gashi und Krasniqi. Vom Valbonatal kehrte er über Merturi, Nikaj, Shala, Shoshi, Suma und Pult nach Shkodra zurück. Im August 1904 ging er von Shkodra über Theth, Abat und Nikaj bis zum Quellgebiet des Valbonaflusses und, nachdem er sein Ziel erreichte, kehrte er von dort aus über den Pass Qafa e Valbonës nach Theth und Shkodra zurück. Die Reisen der Jahre 1903 und 1904 werden in seinem Buch Aus dem nordalbanischen Hochgebirge, Sarajevo 1909, geschildert, aus dem die folgende Fotosammlung entnommen wurde. In diesem Band erzählte uns Erich Liebert, dass er auch in den Jahren 1905, 1907 und 1908 in Albanien war, doch wir besitzen von diesen Expeditionen weder veröffentlichte Aufzeichnungen noch Abbildungen. Im Jahre 1910 veröffentlichte Liebert noch einen Aufsatz über Blutrache und Gastfreundschaft bei den Malsoren Oberalbaniens. In den Balkankriegen (1912-1913) und vermutlich auch während des Ersten Weltkrieges war Erich Liebert in der Türkei für das Rote Kreuz tätig. Darüber hinaus weiß man heute wenig über diesen mutigen Entdecker.

Shqipëria e Veriut në vitet 1902 – 1908

Eksploruesi austriak Erih Libert (1873-1951) ishte kirurg me profesion. Për herë të parë shkoi në Shqipëri në shtator 1902 ku shëtiti zonën e Pultit dhe malet në jug të lumit Drin. Në gusht 1903 shkoi në Shkodër dhe kaloi me shqiptarin Luigj Jakoviqi në Dushman, përgjatë bregut të majtë të Drinit, në pjesën jugore të Merturit, në Gash dhe në Krasniq. Nga lugina e Valbonës u kthye nëpërmjet Merturit, Nikajt, Shalës, Shoshit, Sumës dhe Pultit për në Shkodër. Në gusht 1904 Erih Liberti u nis nga Shkodra, kësaj radhe për të parë burimin e lumit Valbonë. Kaloi në Thethi, Abat dhe Nikaj, dhe u kthye nga Valbona nëpërmjet Qafës së Valbonës. Udhëtimet e vitit 1903 dhe 1904 janë përshkruar në librin e tij Aus dem nordalbanischen Hochgebirge (Nga Malësia e Shqipërisë së Veriut), Sarajevë 1909, nga i cili është marrë ky koleksion fotografik. Në këtë vëllim Liberti na tregon se ishte në Shqipëri edhe në vitin 1905, 1907 dhe 1908, por nga këto udhëtime nuk kemi as shënime, as fotografi. Në vitin 1910 Liberti botoi një artikull studimor mbi gjakmarrjen dhe mikpritjen te malësoret e Shqipërisë së Epërme. Gjatë Luftës Ballkanike (1912-1913) dhe ka të ngjarë edhe gjatë Luftës së Parë Botërore, Liberti ishte drejtuesi i një ekipi mjekësh të Kryqit të Kuq që punoi në Turqi gjatë luftimeve në Çanakkale. Veç informacionit të lartëpërmendur, për këtë eksplorues guximtar dihet shumë pak.
