Albania in 1936 — 1941

Erich von Luckwald (1884-1969) was a German diplomat and author. He studied law in Berlin and was in the German diplomatic service during the First World War. He returned to diplomacy in 1926 and, after a period as head of the German consulate in Lodz (Poland), Luckwald served as German chargé d’affaires in Albania in 1931-1934 and was, at the same time, head of the NSDAP (Nazi Party) liaison office there. From 27 October 1934 to 11 December 1936, he was then German ambassador to Albania. In the period 1936-1938, Luckwald was consul-general in Danzig, and in the last months of the Second World War, he was the representative (pseudo-ambassador) of the German Foreign Office in the occupied protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. His interest and experience in Albania led to the book publication: Albanien: Land zwischen Gestern und Morgen (Albania: Country between Yesterday and Tomorrow), Munich 1942, which also includes his many photographs of the country. Most of them stem from a journey around the country that seems to have taken place in the summer of 1936, although some photos date from up to 1941, the period of the Italian occupation.
